Cum Again?...

'CUM CLUBBING' | FRIDAY 10 SEPTEMBER | 8PM - LATE

For one night only VIVID hosts an art party inspired by the colourful club nights of Birmingham's underground scenes in the 1980s. VIVID's project space will be taken over by live music, DJs and visual artists who'll conspire to create an excitingly strange evening of camp disco!

DJs include 80s original ‘Gay Jon', the brains behind Bradford Street's outrageously lewd and notorious Cum Club; and Brian Duffy, award winning sound artist and creator of The Modified Toy Orchestra. Also at VIVID, John Napier (Jugend Klub), Greg Haines (Tropical Hotdog) and Richard A. Spears (Ducks Bath) each bring you a special playlist crafted in response to The Cum Club.

Cum Clubbing is presented as part of Sleeve Notes, an ongoing project conceived by artist-curator Trevor Pitt (POD projects) during his residency at VIVID in 2009. Sleeve Notes examines the spaces where popular culture fraternizes with the canonical world of art and the individuals who played a significant, often underground role in shaping the music, fashion, and club scenes in Birmingham during the late 70s and 1980s.

Tickets £5 | available from theticketsellers.

Talkin' Rhubarb

Last Thursday was my fourth appearance on the In The Belly show on Rhubarb Radio, Birmingham's finest local radio station. We spoke of many things: Papier mache faces, New Jack Swing and lunchtime kebabs amongst other things. We also played some pretty mint music and here's the show in full for your listening pleasure. Groovy:

JUGEND KLUB CD.03 - Richard A. Spears

Last month's free mix CD, given away to all those who attended Jugend Klub on 23rd April, was mixed by the wonderful Richard A. Spears. A warped mix of electro, hip-hop and general psychedelia in 4 parts - I urge you to download it all here IMMEDIATELY.

FEEL MY BICEP confirmed for 30th May!

Yes indeedy, fresh from their tour of China, Bicep will be paying a visit to the slightly less glamourous surroundings of Birmingham. If you haven't checked out their blog, www.feelmybicep.com, you must do so NOW. They have a ridiculous amount of free tunes on there. From obscure italo tracks to the latest edits that are currently tearing up dancefloors across the globe. An inexhaustible resource for DJs and a Mecca for all music-lovers!

JUGEND KLUB CD.02

The second free mix CD from Jugend Klub marks my mix debut and hopefully not my last.

The concept on the Sungazer mix was really to look at the lighter direction that the shoegaze sound has inspired. So don't expect My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive, this is a more blissed out selection.

I kicked things off with the early Underworld track 'Tongue' which is almost as balearic as it gets, which is then followed by two of the electronic scenes brightest stars 'Toro Y Moi' and 'Washed Out'.

The timeless Daniel Wang track 'Free Lovin' merges nicely into local lad and Ex Sunset Cinema Club bass player's Greg Bird's track 'Wonderland', with the mix then peaking with Dubstep's 'Man of the moment' 'Joy Orbison' and the epic monster that is Fuck Buttons 'Surf Solar'

I hope you all enjoy!

Further tracklisting available on request.

JUGEND KLUB CD.01

Jugend Klub is expanding like some sort of national social political movement at the moment, unfortunately I can't think of any relevant comparison, but the fact remains that each night seems to be bigger and better than the last. On Friday we had guest DJs Ben Thomas and Jack Adams (two of the boys behind Golden Trash) plus the usual residents.

But last friday was also a first for Jugend Klub as we gave away copies of our very first mix CD with a mix by myself and Ben Thomas. Our aim is to do one of these free CDs a month featuring mixes by both our resident DJs and our guests.

Here is Ben's mix that featured on this very first CD. My mix however is strictly for the CD only so if you didn't pick one up on Friday you'll just have to lump it.

Sunflower Lounge film night

Last night Jugend Klub hosted its first film night at the Sunflower Lounge. We went for an 80s cop thriller theme with two classics: Assault on Precinct 13 and the lesser-known but equally brilliant To Live & Die In L.A.

We'll be doing more film nights in the future so keep a look out for those (or even email us some suggestions of films you'd like to see). In the meantime, here's the trailer for To Live & Die In L.A. -

Last Night

Last night was our third Jugend Klub at The Victoria, and our most successful yet. Big thanks to everyone who came down and danced themselves silly and to the DJs who generally behaved themselves.

Here's another mix by Mustapha Dance, one of our guest DJs last night:

Camp Dance Classics

Here is a mix of my top 10 fave camp dance tunes of all time, although this is not exactly a top 10 people will be that familiar with. I imagine if Heart FM did a similar sort of list we’d get Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor and such-like but we’ve heard those songs so much over the course of our lives I thought it might be nice to give some of the unsung heroes of camp dance music a look-in. So here are ten of the most joyously camp party tunes ever, and not a Weathergirl in sight (sorry ladies!).

You can read all about my song choices at the Blue Whale Studios blog here.
